Common questions

What people ask about EDI providers

Who provides EDI?

EDI is provided by specialist networks and managed service providers rather than by the retailers or suppliers themselves. Transalis is one such provider, based in the UK, connecting more than 15,000 organisations across over 50 countries through a single connection.

What does an EDI provider actually do?

An EDI provider translates business documents between the formats each trading partner uses, delivers them securely, and confirms they arrived. Transalis also manages partner onboarding, data mapping, compliance and monitoring, so the customer's own team does not need EDI specialists.

Can you give an example of EDI in practice?

A supplier receives a purchase order from a retailer straight into its own system, sends back an order confirmation and a despatch advice, then issues the invoice, all automatically. Transalis processes more than 30 million such transactions every year.

Has EDI been replaced by anything?

No. EDI remains the standard for high-volume trading between businesses, and it now runs alongside eInvoicing, which is becoming mandatory in a growing number of countries. Transalis provides both on one connection, which is why the two are rarely worth buying separately.

Do I need EDI and eInvoicing, or just one?

Most businesses eventually need both. EDI carries the trading documents between companies; eInvoicing satisfies the tax rules a government sets, such as the UK mandate arriving in April 2029. One connection to Transalis covers both.
